Stir Creativity

Curated by Ashley McKenzie-Barnes
Presented by Bombay Sapphire

What has the last year taught us about our creativity, personal growth, and imagination? Our realities have been altered, as we’ve watched the world undergo dramatic shifts during restrictive lockdowns and reduced mobility. We’ve learned to embrace new ways of social engagement and how to re-imagine the joy of art and communication.

In 2021 Bombay Sapphire presents a series of installations with innovative creative explorers whose projects embrace the timely and necessary practices of self-care, introspection, mediation, and wonder. Set to intentionally inspire diverse audiences indulge in self-expression, discover artistry, challenge their senses and provoke originality within themselves. A journey curated by Ashley McKenzie-Barnes and crafted by William Ukoh, Raquel Da Silva and Ben Z Cooper, examining feelings of nostalgia and connectivity to nature and community through the adaptation of sculpture, AR and multimedia landscapes, that incorporate unique elements of the Bombay Sapphire experience.

Sunday In The Strand of 4C:
July 26 – August 1

A piece on the meditative nature of self-care Sundays.

Developed in the confinements of COVID-19, the inspiration for Sunday In The Strand of 4C dates back to William Ukoh’s childhood. The work reflects on the notion of self-care, through a participatory multi-media installation set in nature. The reflective exterior element projects the outside influences of our current realities, while the interior architecture guides audiences into another other realm, asking them to seek rest and solitude. The accompanying soundscape of the soothing sounds of nature induce a sense of peace, while the Sunday In The Strand of 4C film installation plays in the backdrop, amongst the essence of Bombay botanicals ingredients, providing a calm and meditative zen space.

Effervescent Dream (Physical Installation): August 10 – 28

The overhead installation pulls the focus up from our linear tasks, handheld screens, and invites viewers to see the sky as if from beneath a hazy, otherworldly field.

As we look upwards, our gaze is reminiscent of time spent searching for images in the clouds or letting our minds drift amongst the treetops. This abstracted perspective of the sky over our heads invites us to take time to let our imaginations wander, relax and play. The AR filter is constantly evolving and generating new ways of perceiving the scenery behind it. No two moments are the same. A place where reality and daydreams meet.

The Infinite Garden & Retract and Reflect (AR pieces):
August 10 – 28
With a hope that you pause and find inspiration in this moment, within a digital viewing of our environment, as the space fills with the influences of a Bombay-inspired botanical garden. The personal experience with our handheld devices expands to one interacting with a physical environment. The opportunity to move, explore, express and share.
